He Returned…

He Returned…

“Okay,” Emma said softly.

She unfolded the page.

“To my darling Lily,” she began.

At the first sound of Caroline’s name on another woman’s lips, Robert almost burst into the room. But Emma kept reading, and Robert stayed where he was, gripped by something stronger than anger.

The letter was not dramatic. It was not a farewell written by a dying woman who knew what was coming. It was one of a set, written for future birthdays and hard days and moments Caroline had apparently anticipated in the ordinary way loving mothers do. For the first day of third grade. For the day Lily got her first heartbreak. For the day she felt ugly, or lonely, or brave.

Caroline had done that. Of course she had.

She had prepared love in advance.

Emma finished the letter, and Lily pressed it to her chest.

“I dreamed about her last night,” Lily said.

Emma brushed a tear from Lily’s cheek. “Was it a good dream?”

Lily nodded. “She was calling me from the car.”

Robert’s spine went rigid.

Emma stilled. “From the car?”

Lily’s face changed. Fear moved across it like a shadow. “I don’t want him to know.”

Emma’s voice stayed calm. “Who?”

Lily swallowed. “Mr. Pierce.”

Robert felt the world tilt.

Daniel Pierce was his chief financial officer. His closest executive. The man who had helped him build Callahan Holdings from a regional firm into a national powerhouse. Daniel had spent holidays with them. He had attended Caroline’s memorial. He had carried Lily on his shoulders at the Fourth of July barbecue two summers ago.

Emma placed the letter down very carefully.

“Lily,” she said, “you told me we were going to tell your dad today.”
