The Lie They Called Tradition-kybie

The Lie They Called Tradition-kybie

]

Afraid.

“What is happening?” my mother asked.

The officer stepped forward.

“You will come with us.”

My father frowned.

“Why?”

“For what you allowed to happen to your daughter.”

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

My mother’s face turned pale.

My father tried to speak—

But the words didn’t come.

Then my grandfather appeared.

His head wrapped in cloth.

Eyes burning.

The moment he saw me—

He knew.

“You have destroyed this family,” he spat.

I trembled.

But this time—

I didn’t run.

Because someone stood in front of me.

Protecting me.

“No,” the officer said firmly.

“She saved herself.”

Those words hit differently.

Saved.

Not ruined.

Saved.

As they took them away…

The whole village watched.

Some shocked.

Some ashamed.

Some… silent.

Because maybe—

Deep down—

They knew.

Later that evening, I asked Mr. Ade the question that wouldn’t leave my mind.

“If it’s not tradition… why did they say it was?”

He sighed.

“Because it’s easier to control people with fear… than with truth.”

I looked down.

Tears fell quietly.

“So they lied to me… all this time?”

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

That night, I lay down again.

Same place.

Same small mat.

But everything felt different.

The fear wasn’t gone completely…

But it wasn’t in control anymore.

Because now I knew something powerful:

What happened to me…

Was never my fault.

And no matter how they tried to hide it—

Wrong…

Is still wrong.

My sister had just given birth, so I went to the hospital to visit. But as I walked down the hallway, I heard my husband’s voice. “She has no idea. At least she’s good for money.” Then my mother spoke. “You two deserve to be happy. She’s nothing but a failure.” My sister laughed. “Thanks. I’ll make sure we are happy.” I stayed quiet and turned away. But what happened next shocked them all. I never thought the day my sister had a baby would be the day my life broke apart. That morning, I went to the hospital with a small gift, ready to congratulate Sierra. I expected smiles, maybe a few happy tears. Instead, I walked into something cold and painful. As I got closer to the maternity ward, I heard a voice coming from a half-open door. Kevin. My husband. “She has no clue,” he said, laughing softly. “At least she brings in money.” I froze. My whole body went still. Then I heard my mother. “You two deserve happiness. She’s just a failure.” My stomach dropped. My hands went numb. And then Sierra… my own sister. Laughing. “Thanks. I’ll make sure we’re happy.” For a second, nothing felt real. Their voices blurred together, like I was underwater. My husband. My mother. My sister. Talking like I didn’t exist. Like I was just there to pay for their lives. I moved a little closer, barely breathing. Then Kevin spoke again. “The baby looks just like me. We don’t even need a DNA test.” My mother made a soft sound of agreement. Sierra whispered, proud and calm. “This is our family now.” They thought I was far away. They thought I knew nothing. But I heard everything. My heart broke right there in that hallway. All the years of trying to have a child. All the money. All the nights he said he was working late. It all made sense.
